In this Scottish medieval adventure, after attempting a daring rescue of her war-band family, Drest learns that Lord Faintree's traitorous uncle has claimed the castle for his own and convinced the knights that the lord has been slain . . . by her hand. Now with a hefty price on her head, Drest must find a way to escape treacherous knights, all the while proving to her father, the "Mad Wolf of the North," and her irrepressible band of brothers that she is destined for more than a life of running and hiding. Even if that takes redefining what it means to be a warrior.

In the gripping last act of The Mad Wolf's Daughter (2018), crafty Drest escaped with her life from Faintree Castle--but doing so has made her the prime target in a traitorous plot. In addition to freeing her da--the Mad Wolf--and her brothers from Faintree Castle, she also saved Emerick, Lord Faintree, from his scheming uncle. They are recovering with friend Tig's family in Phearsham Ridge when a disguised castle knight infiltrates the town, spreading lies. He is searching for Emerick. And because Drest has become his protector, a price is on her head. The Mad Wolf is determined to protect Drest, but his methods no longer suit her. She, Emerick, and Tig refuse to go on the run, planning instead to take the battle to Faintree Castle. But who's loyal? Who's duplicitous? In feudal 13th-century Scotland, powerful alliances are necessary for success, as the thoroughly researched story makes clear, and forging them allows Drest to continue to develop her newfound diplomatic skills, solidifying her reputation as an ingenious, righteous leader. Her position is not an easy one, as the political winds continue to shift, betrayals abound, and battles rage. Magras deftly balances introspection and action as Drest proves herself willing to risk everything--and the result will leave readers cheering.Fair-minded men and strong women in unusual roles make this a standout among quest tales for middle graders. Grades 4-7 This sequel picks up where the first book ended. Drest, daughter of the warlord Mad Wolf, is still in trouble and on the run from Lord Faintree's usurping uncle, Sir Oswyn. Worse, Sir Oswyn has wasted no time in putting a wolf's head bounty, the highest paying bounty, on Drest's head, claiming that she killed Lord Faintree. Now, not only does she have to be on guard for the usual ruffians, she has to avoid the knights who know who she is. Her father and brothers have their own problems, so Drest and injured young lord Emerick are on their own. Magras maintains the breathtaking pace of the previous book, and while Drest is as feisty as ever, by the end of the book she has developed into a deeper, more thoughtful character. She challenges her father to rethink his perception of what constitutes a warlord and his band. In addition to all the action, the book is laced with humor while maintaining an undercurrent of thoughtfulness. No sophomore slump here: the book is every bit as good as its predecessor. Includes a glossary and historical notes.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)

In this sequel to cf2]The Mad Wolf's Daughtercf1], girl warrior Drest tries to help her new friend Emerick regain the castle stolen from him. She embarks on a quest for allies but finds she's been named a "wolf's head" with a bounty on her life. The medieval-Scottish setting is well drawn, and Drest's efforts to be true to herself are convincing.
