Swedish journalist Aaro (The Final Story) wraps a titillating bow around this poignant story of one woman's quest to satisfy her needs before those of others, for the first time in her life. Long before Julie married âA,' she faked orgasms. Finally, after confessing that she has never had one, Julie decides to seek a change. She buys Mr. Rabbit, a vibrator guaranteeing an orgasm within 30 days. Over the month, Julie reconnects with what she wants and doesn't want, things she lost touch with years before. There are glimpses into past relationships, illuminating the heart of the narrativeâwhy Julie is not entirely happy yet incapable of demanding change. Her need to please will ring strongly with many readers, as will her struggle to speak up, but the spare style and minimal detail don't allow her to become as fully realized as readers might want. Lack of secondary character details offers an interesting juxtaposition to Julie's penchant for prioritizing others. Nevertheless, a lot happens very subtly in the narrative, and the Swedish setting gives North American readers insight into the universal nature of this "coming"-of-age story. Agent: David Miller, Rogers, Coleridge, and White (Canada).
