“You don’t grow up on a divorce ranch and not learn to take a vow seriously.”
When Callie McBride finds a woman’s phone number written on a scrap of paper her husband has thrown away, she thinks that her marriage is over. Callie flees to Nevada and her Aunt Nash’s Tamarosa Ranch, where she’s shocked to see that the place of so many happy childhood memories is in disrepair. Worse, Aunt Nash is acting bizarrely—hoarding stacks of old photographs, burying a book in the yard, and railing against Kit Covey, a handsome government park ranger who piques Callie’s interest.
But Aunt Nash may prove to be saner than she seems once Callie pulls back the curtain on Tamarosa’s heyday—the 1940s and ’50s, when high-society and Hollywood women ventured to the ranch for quickie divorces and found a unique sisterhood—and uncovers a secret promise Nash made to her true love. Callie will come to see is that no life is ever ordinary. No story of love is, either.

Callie McBride's life is changing. Her youngest child has left the nest, and she suspects her husband of having an affair. Callie flees to Nevada and her aunt Nash, whose Tamarosa Ranch was once a haven for women seeking a quick divorce. Callie is shocked to discover this once beloved place has fallen into disrepair. To make matters worse, Aunt Nash is behaving strangely, hoarding photographs, burying books, and throwing boots at the local land officer, who is working to relocate the wild horses that bring her joy and damage her property. The novel alternates between different time settings, and readers learn of the Tamarosa's heyday as an oasis for high society and of Callie's modern-day story of a woman seeking her next step in life. Caletti (The Last Forever, 2014) once again combines interesting characters, pitch-perfect dialogue, and an intriguing plot to tell a deeply memorable story. Her latest is a thoughtful exploration of love and marriage and the power of family and friendship to help along the way.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.) -

A National Book Award finalist for her YA fiction whose first adult novel was 2013's bone-rattling He's Gone, Caletti returns with another adult work featuring three women who gather at their aunt's now crumbling Nevada "divorce ranch" from the 1950s. Past, present, and the strength of female friendship blend in a work billed for the Kristin Hannah-Liane Moriarty crowd.
